A select group of works by I-Hsiung Ju (1923-2012) will be exhibited at the Gallery of the Lambertville Branch of the Bank of Princeton, December 16, 2016 to January 14, 2017.
Ju, a master of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, was a resident of Princeton, NJ after retiring in the 1980s from Washington and Lee University. I-Hsiung Ju grew up in a family of artists in Jiangyin, in the province of Jiangsu, China. He studied Chinese literature at Xiamen University in China and art and history at Santo Tomas University in the Philippines. Adept in both the Chinese literary and painting traditions, Ju was an exemplary literati painter.
The exhibition will showcase Ju’s use of traditional Chinese methods to depict American landscapes. Unlike the more recent wave of Chinese diasporic artists who left China for the United States after the Tiananmen Incident in 1989, Ju continued the Chinese tradition in his teaching and artistic expressions.
The opening reception will be held Saturday, December 17th from 9:30am to 11:45am. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday between 9am and 5pm, Friday between 9am and 6pm, and Saturday between 9am and 12pm at 10 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
